The funeral service for Sharyl D. (Whetter) Erber, 70, Valley City, ND will be 2:00 PM, Monday, October 2, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City, ND. Rev. Dan Faust will officiate and the burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Valley City. She died at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley on September 24, 2017. Visitation will be held at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City on Sunday, Oct. 1st from 5:00-7:00 PM. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM following the visitation. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the church service on Monday. Sharyl was born on July 29, 1947 at St. Andrew’s Hospital in Bottineau, ND to Harry and Helen (Estenson) Whetter. She was educated in Gardena, ND and Bottineau, ND. On October 10, 1965, she married Norman C. Erber at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bottineau, ND. For approximately 50 years, she worked in the food service industry. Initially as a waitress at Tommy’s Café, in Bottineau, ND and then moving into the kitchen as a cook while at the Hub Restaurant in Rugby, ND. Her cooking career continued at the elementary school in Rugby, ND, the North 40 Café in Rolla, ND, the Tower City Café, in Tower City, ND, Mercy Hospital in Valley City, ND and the Barnes County Senior Citizens Center in Valley City, ND. She retired in 2011. Sharyl’s most important job was raising a family and providing a home. North Dakota was a special place to Sharyl, “I was born on the prairie, and I’m going to die on the Prairie.” Enjoying a quiet day at a campground, especially Clausen Springs, ND, was an activity Sharyl and Norman tried to do as often as they could in retirement. Gardening and reading were passions throughout her life. She particularly enjoyed reading Sue Grafton’s Alphabet mysteries. Sharyl is survived by her four children: Randy S. (Lynn) Erber of Redmond, WA, Curtis N. (Joanna) Erber of Fargo, ND, Roger D. (Brenda) Erber of Muscatine, IA, and Rebecca E. (Boyd) Westman of Valley City, ND; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Kevin, Christian, Jaden, Nolan, Kellen and Cambrie; siblings: Marjorie D. (John) Duff of Havana, ND, Eugene L. (Vicki) Whetter of Bottineau, ND, and Barbara L. Whetter of Valley City, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman C. Erber; an infant son, Michael D. Erber; and a sister, Janice M. (Jerry) Casavant. An online guestbook is available at www.oliver-nathanchapel.com
