Kalyn Jana Anderson was born August 30, 1949 in Valley City, ND, the daughter of Melvin Robert and Ethel Irene (Risa) Anderson. She attended Valley City Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1967. In 1971, she married Donald Gene Nordstrom, M.D. and was later divorced. Dr. Anderson earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Dakota (cum laude, 1971), a Master of Arts in Nursing (psychiatric-mental health and community/family) from The University of Iowa (1984), and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology also from The University of Iowa (1986-1987) and University of Oregon (1987-1988). An American Psychological Association Accredited internship was served at the Student Counseling Center, Illinois State University (1989-1990). Following her education, Kalyn passed licensure as a psychologist (ND & MN, 1990) and as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN, 1993). She was certified through the American Nursed Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a clinical specialist in both adult psychiatric-mental health nursing and in child and adolescent psychiatric-mental health nursing. In addition, she was a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT, 1990) and the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT, 1986). In January, 1994, Dr. Anderson established South Pointe Psychology while still working with Dr. Dwight Lysne of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Associates (CAPC) with whom she was affiliated from 1992 until September, 1995. Dr. Anderson provided a wide range of psychological treatment from personal (individual, couple/marital and group psychotherapy) to career counseling and clinical assessment. As a registered nurse, counselor, and psychologist, Dr. Anderson was employed by: The University of Iowa Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; Glenwood Hills/Golden Valley Health Center, adult psychiatry, Minneapolis, MN; Family Service Agency, Cedar Rapids, IA; The University of Iowa College of Nursing; Valley City State University; and the North Dakota University System. Dr. Anderson was a member of the American Psychological Associates; Sigma Theta Tau (National Nursing Honor Society, 1984); and Phi Delta Kappa (Professional Education Fraternity, 1983). She was accepted in MENSA and in 1981 was awarded Outstanding Young Woman of America. She was in private practice for 37 years. She excelled in scheduling her professional daily appointments and keeping in touch with clients. Kalyn is survived by her mother, E. Irene Anderson of Valley City; special cousins, Sharon Anderson of Fargo and Marjeanne Sunde of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin R. Anderson; grandparents; and Godparents, Paul and Stella Anderson.
